Indoor Accomodation

Tortoises need to be provided with enough warmth and light even on cool/wet days in summer.

This can be done using an open-top tortoise table:

This has the advantage of providing better air flow and ventilation. It is however more difficult to maintain high enough temperatures with this design.

The alternative is an enclosed vivarium which may have poor ventilation but can be insulated effectively to maintain a suitable temperature.

  Tortoise Vivarium Design

  • Use a max-min thermometer to check day and night temps. Night time temperaturesshould be above 12ºC for Mediterranean tortoises and 20ºC for tropical tortoises.
  • The vivarium can be insulated by standing on sheets of 2” thick polystyrene, and attaching polystyrene sheets to the sides and back of the tank. There should still be ventilation and good air flow through the vivarium.

Note, if in any doubt, contact a qualified electrician for advice on electrical wiring and fittings.
